reminiscing about walking the streets of Warsaw

13 September, 2015

Instead of using The Child’s nap time to prepare course materials for my upcoming term at DePaul, I’m instead reminiscing about walking the streets of Warsaw.

The weather in Chicago this weekend offered the first taste of autumn’s arrival, and on a whim, I happened to check the weather in Warsaw.  Half the world away, they’re enjoying the same weather.

Though we wouldn’t arrive for another few weeks, the weather in Warsaw when we moved there back in 2011 was just as gorgeous.  I know my opinion wasn’t popular among the locals, but I can’t think of a better time of year to arrive in Poland.

In addition to getting to know my new city, my main objective after arriving in Poland was to find a job.  Numerous hours covered numerous kilometers, armed with a tiny bit of abysmal Polish, some resumes printed on fancy paper, and a hopeful attitude.  I can’t imagine getting a job in an American city, at an American university, by walking into the English Department, handing over my resume, and asking if there were any teaching vacancies. To be honest, I was quite surprised that this worked at Szkoɫa Gɫówna Handlowa.

As I prepare to start AY 2015-2016 this week, I’ve been thinking a lot about my time at SGH.  My students there taught me more about teaching English as a foreign language than any of the courses I took as a student.  I also feel like I came into my own as a teacher in the classrooms there, and of all of the experiences I’ve had in life, this is one of my most valued.

There are so, so many things that I loved about my time in Poland, and I appreciate how little things trigger all of my fond memories of the year we spent in Warsaw.  Now if only I could go for a stroll toward Śródmieście, pick up a zapiekanka, and enjoy the rest of my afternoon taking in my surroundings.. instead, I’ll prepare my course materials and brainstorm ways to use homework assignments to help my students make the most of their time in Chicago.

      Cześć Pops!

I’ve been teaching ESL with their English Language Academy. This term I’m teaching grammar and speaking/listening.
