mrida bzzef.. ho & hum.

12 November, 2010

I’m not very sick, I’m just sick a lot.

I have been living in my post site for about a month and a half now, and in that span, I have gotten sick three times: once with a particularly nasty bout of the flu, and twice now with a wicked sore throat, cough, headache, stuffy nose, and general lack of energy.

I’ve got the latter now, and while its not going to kill me, it is annoying me and keeping me from doing the things I would like to be doing (today: Darija lesson, working on some things for school and later tonight, making dinner with friends).  I’m annoyed too with comments that are made to me about me being sick yet again..

Maybe its because I don’t eat meat?

Maybe its because I don’t wear hijab?

Maybe its because I don’t drink enough tea?

Maybe its because I don’t have a heavy woolen jacket on (when its about 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and 55 degrees at night)?

Hygienic practices here are not always what they are back in the States, and I think that may have more to do with me being sick every other week than my wardrobe or dietary habits.

Maybe its because I’m in a new place with lots of new germs..

Maybe its because very few people seem to cover their mouth/nose when they cough/sneeze..

Maybe its because, here, when people share a meal together, one or two glasses are provided for water, which results in folks sharing the same glass..

Maybe its because a lot of times, when someone washes their hands here, they are merely rinsed with cold water and no soap is involved..

This all kind of reminds me of a passage in a book I am currently reading, Glory in a Camel’s Eye, when a family in rural Morocco would make fun of a Peace Corps Volunteer who was posted there because he was concerned with germs, food/water safety, and his health.

Okay, enough ranting..  Its nap time and then time for more tea with honey (and thanks to The Husband, Ammu & Abbu for sending a big bag filled with a variety American tea for me!).  In the future, I think it is time for me to resume carrying my thermos filled with water with me everywhere again.  Hopefully then, I can cut down on ingesting other folks’ germs and still not go thirsty.

Poor you. I think new germs and hygienic practices are the primary culprits. Do you have hand sanitizer? As I recall, Weston was sick a whole lot when he was there. Wish I could bring you tea.
