language learning during exam sessions

14 June, 2012

This week, my graduate students have been taking their final exams for the year.

On Monday, they had their written exam, and for the last few days, a colleague and I have been administering their speaking component.  One part of the speaking component required students to randomly select a short passage, look it over for 60 seconds or so, and then translate it orally.  I was quite surprised by what a great learning activity this was for me; hearing the translations and following along with the written Polish text did a wonderful job of highlighting the differences in Polish and English syntax.
